Earth Day 2009

I guess it all goes back to having the privilege of being a student in Mrs. June Boyd's 3rd grade class. She read Laura Ingalls Wilder, taught poetry and introduced the idea of saving the planet. We recycled, made our own butter and learned what a compost pile was. Ever since, I have had this feeling of personal responsibility to be in awe of our planet and do my part in protecting it.

It's awesome to see that more and more people becoming aware of environmental problems. It's even better that more of us than ever are taking action to combat the problems we have created.

Wednesday, April 22nd is Earth Day. Most of us are making small efforts to make a difference. We ride our bikes, BYOB (bring your on bags) to the grocery, unplug our energy sucking appliances and electronics, use cloth napkins at home, etc...

Take some time to read 50 Green tips for Earth Day at divinecaroline.com and add a few to your daily repertoire.

Also, if you have plans to see Disney's new movie, Earth, Disney will plant a tree for every ticket purchased during opening week.

Canton Texas In Less Than 2 Weeks!

Hi Friends!
Wanted to let you know I'm organizing a flea market trip to Canton, TX on Friday, May 1st. A couple of people have expressed interest in going so here's the scoop:

We will leave from Norman at 6:00 AM sharp. Depending on numbers and what people are looking for, we may need to caravan. It takes about 4 hours so we will get there by 10:00.

10:00 to 5:00 scour for treasures, eat awesome fair food, have a lovely day.

Things shut down at 5:00, so I would recommend, if you have large items that you have left with the dealers, we should start rounding those up around 4:00.

I may have access to my folks 15 passenger van, so anyone that has the intention of finding larger items, I am happy to haul them back for you if you are willing to pitch in on gasoline. I need to know ahead of time if anyone will be interested it's use.

Things you will want to bring:
  • Sunscreen
  • Cash (1's, 10's and 20's are best)
  • A cart or wagon that can roll on asphalt
  • A couple of canvas bags
  • Comfy shoes
  • H2O bottle
  • Your imagination
If you want to come, please let me know as soon as possible. It's going to be a blast!

Flowers to plant...

If you live in the great state of Oklahoma, here are a few plants you might consider planting if you have an area for full sun and want to attract bees and butterflies.

Scabiosa in butterfly blue, shown below. It is also known as pincushion flower. Beautiful blossoms that will bloom all summer if you continue to dead head spent blooms.

Echinacea, or cone flower is also great for full sun gardens. They come in many different varieties and do pretty well as cut flowers for a wildflower bouquet. They mature to a height of 24 to 36 inches. I'm trying out three varieties of Big Sky, Green Envy, Magnus and White Swan. Below is a photo of some of the Big Sky varieties.

Black-Eyed Susans is another sun lover that looks great with cone flowers. Mature height is 2 to 3 feet tall.

Carolina Jessamine is a perfect early blooming climber that loves sun. My friends Dana and Jessica have it growing all over their front porch. Absolutely gorgeous. We just planted some next to an arbor leading into the back yard.

Can't wait for a visit from the hummingbirds. They love the Jessamine as well as Abelias. A beautiful semi-evergreen shrub that has fountain like, arching branches. Flowers from summer into the fall and is a butterfly attractant.

If you would like more information on purchasing any of these or other plants, please feel free to email me.

Happy Planting!

Easter Weekend Fun...

Oh boy, this weekend is going to be a good one.

Looking forward to hanging out at Collected Thread tomorrow night. Lots and lots of cotton skirts will be available to take home, as well as belts, hair accessories and vintage clothing. Hope you can stop by.

Saturday night Tyler and Wes are playing at Cuppie's and Joe along with Tyler Hopkins. Can't wait to relax with a carrot cake cupcake and a glass of iced tea and listen to some good music.

Sunday morning Easter service at St Paul's Cathedral. The trumpet and timpani are sweet! We definitely are going since we inadvertently "gave up" going to church for Lent. We can't seem to figure out what happened other than going out of town a lot. ( and sleeping in a lot ) Oops.

What a working sewing machine can produce...

I really got after it this week. My momma was kind enough to let me borrow her machine since mine has been acting like a little toot. This week I knocked out 11 skirts, a couple of dresses, some tops, belts and lots of randoms. On to the next pile of pretty fabric!

Better get to it...One week until the show at Collected Thread.
